My Approach to Psychotherapy:
Psychotherapy encompasses a broad spectrum of techniques and approaches, each unique in structure and focus. Some methods are highly structured, while others take a more open-ended approach. Certain techniques emphasize observable behaviors, while others delve deeply into unconscious processes. You might recognize these approaches by names such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychoanalysis, Humanistic Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and many others.
Likewise, individuals come to therapy with diverse expectations. Some seek a safe, non-judgmental space to express themselves freely. Others prioritize learning and implementing effective strategies to overcome obstacles in thought patterns or behaviors. Many come to address negative emotions or memories, while some pursue self-discovery, exploring their personality, past experiences, dreams, and unconscious thoughts. Often, people are searching for a combination of these, or something entirely unique.
Following the principles of influential psychologists like Carl Rogers, I believe therapy is, at its heart, about cultivating a human connection in which authenticity can flourish. For therapy to be effective, regardless of the specific approach, clients must feel they are in a safe, accepting space where they can freely express themselves and grow into their true selves. This is precisely what I offer—a confidential environment where you can be yourself without fear of judgment.
I have been trained in the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach, a structured, goal-oriented method focused on the present moment. While this approach emphasizes clarity and measurable outcomes, our sessions will also have room to explore past events and engage in open dialogue. This balance ensures that our work is both directed by clear goals and attuned to your personal needs.
Our approach is grounded in scientific understanding, emphasizing the interconnectedness of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we will identify patterns that may be holding you back and develop strategies to overcome them. I also stress the importance of acceptance, aligning actions with personal values, and fostering meaningful change.
Therapy here is both structured and flexible, combining a practical, problem-solving approach with openness to your unique perspective. It’s a personalized process of understanding and addressing the factors contributing to your challenges in a way that is both pragmatic and deeply meaningful.
Is This Therapy Right for You?
This form of psychotherapy may be helpful in the following situations:
Managing Anxiety and Worry: Learning to cope with feelings of anxiety, excessive worry, fear of the future, and intrusive thoughts.
Processing Negative Emotions: Navigating emotions such as sadness, resentment, regret, and anger (whether self-directed or towards others).
Addressing Social Challenges: Overcoming social anxiety and loneliness, improving social skills, and feeling more at ease in social situations.
Building Self-Esteem and Assertiveness: Enhancing self-confidence and learning assertiveness—the ability to communicate your thoughts and needs openly and respectfully while maintaining healthy boundaries.
Improving Focus and Productivity: Tackling challenges with focus, time management, procrastination, and self-regulation to boost personal and professional effectiveness.
Self-Discovery and Decision-Making: Gaining insights into your personality and values to make life decisions that align with your authentic self and bring greater satisfaction.
Navigating General Life Challenges: Handling transitions, building resilience, and increasing self-awareness to foster personal growth.
Who is This Therapy Not For?
While online therapy can be effective and convenient, it may not be the best solution for everyone. In the following scenarios, seeking in-person support from a clinical psychologist or mental health professional might be more appropriate:
Severe Mental Health Conditions: Individuals experiencing acute crises, psychosis, or severe mental health challenges that require close monitoring.
Suicidal Thoughts or Behaviors: Those dealing with immediate safety concerns or thoughts of self-harm should reach out to emergency services or in-person crisis support.
Complex Trauma or Abuse: Cases where intensive, hands-on therapeutic approaches are needed may benefit from face-to-face sessions.
Limited Access to a Private Space: If privacy at home for online sessions is not possible, in-person therapy might be a better fit.
If you're unsure whether online therapy is right for you, feel free to reach out for an initial consultation. Together, we can determine the best path forward for your well-being.
About the Therapist
My name is Pedro Coli. I graduated in Psychology from the Catholic University of Santos in 2019 and became a licensed clinical psychologist in Brazil in 2020. Originally from Brazil, I now live in Italy, where I am completing my master’s degree in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Padova. This international experience has given me unique insight into the challenges faced by those living away from their home countries, inspiring me to make high-quality, evidence-based psychotherapy accessible to English speakers.
Throughout my career, I’ve gained a range of experiences that have shaped my therapeutic practice. I’ve worked in Brazil’s judicial system as a forensic psychologist and mediator, conducted trainings on public speaking and anxiety management, and collaborated with multidisciplinary teams to support children with cerebral palsy. I also have research experience in neuroscience, focusing on attention and visual working memory.
At the core of my work, however, is my passion for psychotherapy. I specialize in helping adults navigate challenges such as depression, anxiety, social anxiety, and productivity issues, including adult ADHD. My approach combines evidence-based techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with empathy and collaboration, aiming to provide practical strategies for growth and self-understanding.
